Most steel guitarists prefer nickel wound strings, but about one in three prefers the long-lasting brightness of stainless steel wounds. Note that the difference between nickel and stainless only affects the wound strings. It is the alloy used for the windings.

Jagwire .011 and .0115 plain strings are designated with an "ST" for "Short Twist". Regarding these ST strings, Danny Hullihen of Jagwire says: "We've shortened the twist .060ths to give more string contact, thus longer life, better tone, just a better string."
