Blueground Undergrass
"Barnyard Gone Wrong"
Equal time for banjo players! Actually, once you get past the banjo intros, you'll hear some really hot steel pickin' by Forum regular Mark Van Allen on this CD. This "Psychedelic Hick-Hop Bluegrass" band plays long songs with lots of solos for all six members (banjo, guitar, steel, fiddle, bass and drums). The Rev. Jeff Mosier's occassional singing and songwriting skills redeem his choice of instrument, and Mark really shines on "Wichita Lineman", which he arranged to feature his Mullen pedal steel.

Blueground Undergrass
"NewGround"
Blueground Undergrass matured quite a bit between their two albums. Steeler Mark Van Allen produced this one, guaranteeing that his sweet steel guitar tone was not buried in the mix. It's a good thing, too, as this CD demonstrates how essential a well-played pedal steel is to country rock. Mark's solos are mostly clean and pretty. He doesn't need effects to get his music across, but he does kick them in now and then for variety. In any case, it's great to hear the hands of such of such an accomplished player.
