"Resophonic Rodeo"
This western swing CD grew out of the spontaneous jams that happen
when professional musicians are on the bus or warming up backstage
before a gig. In those situations, Gary plays a 7 string resonator
specially made by for him by master guitar builder Paul Beard.
The squareneck resophonic is usually associated with bluegrass,
but the extra string (a middle E) on Gary's guitar makes a G6th
tuning that is well suited for western swing. The combination of
Bob Wills standards and hot acoustic picking makes this CD a unique
pleasure for swing fans. I never thought such sounds were possible
on a resophonic! Gary plays fast and hard. His phrasing is perfect,
even when the notes are full speed. A few masters can play this
well on electric steel, but I doubt that anyone can do better on
an acoustic!
