In The Steel Of The Night
"An Instrument of Mass Seduction"
Armed with a new 14-string Excel pedal steel and a Fender Steel King amplifier, Al was inspired to record a selection of the most famous show tunes ever written. Rich, jazzy chord changes abound on these carefully constructed arrangements. The melodies are right out front at the top of each tune, and then Al takes you on a tasty ride through steel land over the changes. Great playing by a master jazzman. Thanks, Al!

This is a well-produced, straight-ahead jazz album featuring Al Vescovo on his 14-string Excel pedal steel. His band includes Rich Eames (piano), Bob Saravia (bass), Bruce Becker (drums), and an occasional appearance by Howie Segurson (alto sax).
Al has been playing jazz on guitar and steel for many years, and that experience really shows on this CD. He takes the head and then solos on every tune. This is very cool stuff, sure to shut the mouth of anyone who insists that the pedal steel is "just a country instrument". Whether he's playing chord lines or single note riffs, backing or soloing, Al Vescovo is the epitome of a jazz musician who knows exactly what he's doing.

"Steelin' in Dixie"
I've never heard anything like this! Al Vescovo realized that his steel guitar could sound like each of 3 different instruments in a Dixieland band: clarinet, trumpet and trombone. Through the miracle of overdubbing, he has now re-created that New Orleans sound with a pedal steel. Accompanied by Richard Maloof on tuba and string bass, Bruce Becker on drums, Rich Eames on piano, and himself again on guitar and tenor banjo, Al has made a steel guitar album like no other. His "clarinet" rides are especially fascinating, as his intonation in the upper register is spot on. This has quickly become one of my all-time favorite steel albums.

"Steelin' Some Big Band"
This is not a big band - it's Al's studio combo recording songs made famous by the big bands. Al's jazz chops on pedal steel are among the best you'll hear anywhere.

This CD features Al Vescovo's pedal steel on a great selection of jazz tunes with Latin rhythms, including two songs penned by Al himself.
