Herb Steiner

Herb Steiner needs no introduction to Texan steel players. His live performances with the Cornell Hurd Band, Johnny Bush and at the Texas Steel Guitar Jamboree have endeared him to lovers of traditional steel guitar music. His instrumental albums, featured elsewhere in this catalog, are as much a testament to the purity of his musical vision as to his playing ability.

Herb started his musical career in Southern California as the steel guitarist with Linda Ronstadt's Stone Poneys. He moved to Austin in 1972, where he has since graced the stage with such notable artists as Jerry Jeff Walker, BW Stevenson, Alvin Crow (Herb wrote Crow's hit Nyquil Blues), Wayne Hancock, and traditional country singer James Hand. Herb was voted Steel Guitarist of the Year in 1996 by the Texas Steel Guitar Association, and in 2003 he was inducted into the Western Swing Hall of Fame in Sacramento, California.

In recent years Herb Steiner has, as a musicologist, been documenting classic arrangements that feature the steel guitar. The result has been a series of instructional materials and rhythm tracks intended for home study. I'm very proud to be able to offer these items to you in this Steel Guitar Forum catalog. His charts are among the most readable I've found anywhere, and his knowledge of steel guitar topics is truly amazing. You won't be disappointed with any of the material presented on this page.

"Country Songs for Dobro"

"I started out in 1962 on dobro, and really my first professional gig was as a dobroist for Linda Ronstadt in 1968, who then pushed me in playing steel guitar. I never quit playing resonator guitar, and my playing style is rooted in Josh Graves, Shot Jackson, and Pete Kirby.

"It dawned on me through teaching that steel players frequently are asked to play reso guitar occasionally, but don't really get familiar with the G tuning. So I assembled a course based on the series of lessons I've given to students the last couple of years."

This series of lessons includes a 30-page book and a CD. The book has tabbed arrangements of 13 popular country songs of the past, and essays on scales, slant bar playing, and harmonized scales. Herb discusses the role of dominant, diminished/augmented, and minor chords and where to find them. He lists the major slant bar positions and harmonized scales that can be played with them. Herb also covers three-finger banjo style and an introduction to bluegrass.

The CD features Herb playing the scales, then playing the tunes with a BIAB rhythm track that is suitable for practice. The tunes are:

  1. Wildwood Flower
  2. Great Speckled Bird
  3. Wabash Cannonball
  4. What A Friend We Have In Jesus
  5. Blue Moon of Kentucky
  6. You Win Again
  7. Cold Cold Heart
  8. Your Cheating Heart
  9. Wabash Blues
  10. I Still Miss Someone
  11. Born To Lose
  12. Foggy Mountain Breakdown.

The book assumes the player knows how to hold the bar, wear picks, read simple tablature, and has a little experience with music. The tab and the material is for the Dobro beginner with some music experience, or the intermediate player. A true beginner in music would likely find the material a little over his head without private instruction.

"Swinging On E9th"

12 Arrangements of Western Swing and Pop Standards for the E9th Tuning
Basic 3 pedal / 2 knee lever setup

This course is for players who wanted to get a more "swing sound" in their playing, but only had a single neck guitar with a Nashville E9th tuning. Using a basic 3 pedal / 2 knee lever setup (E-Eb and E-F) to achieve a "C6th tuning" sound, Herb designed this course for the experienced beginner through intermediate level player. It features progressively more challenging arrangements of both traditional western swing instrumentals and popular standards of yesteryear played by swing bands. Herb teaches alternative string grips to create more interesting chords, a few intros and endings, some single string licks, and several traditional jazz chord progressions only occasionally found in more "country-type" songs.

The CD contains Herb playing the solo with a rhythm track, followed by the rhythm track without the steel guitar solo. The 30-page book contains the tablature for all the songs and licks on the CD. As an aid to learning, the solos are recorded at slower tempos than normally would be played onstage. In addition to the songs and licks, there's short lesson in chord construction.

The songs included are:

  1. Texas Playboy Rag - D
  2. Steelin' Home - D
  3. Panhandle Rag - E
  4. Steel Guitar Rag - E
  5. Roadside Rag - E and C
  6. Night Life intro and solo - D
  7. Caravan - F minor
  8. All Of Me - C
  9. I Can't Give You Anything But Love - F

12 More Western Swing Steel Guitar

It teaches twelve more arrangements of both traditional western swing instrumentals and popular standards of yesteryear played by swing bands.

You'll learn to swing with alternative chord positions and progressions to eight traditional Bob Wills songs and four "Tin Pan Alley" standards. The CD contains a dozen solos recorded to a rhythm track, followed by the rhythm track without the steel guitar solo. The 26-page book contains the tablature for all the songs. As an aid to learning, the solos are recorded at slower tempos than normally would be played onstage.

"Shuffles, Ballads, and Waltzes"

10 Solo Arrangements for E9th Tuning
Basic 3 pedal / 3 knee lever setup

Here's a collection of ten tabbed out arrangements of some classic country standards, with a CD of Herb playing the solo to a rhythm track, followed by the track without steel. So the student can play the solo himself, of course!

The pedal setup required is a regular E9th tuning with 3 pedals and 3 knee levers (E lowers, E raises, and D# lower), that are the basic levers in any E9th tuning

There are 3 "Texas shuffles" in the Ray Price/Johnny Bush style, 5 ballads in slower tempos, and 2 waltzes that everyone in country music has had to play dozens of times in their bandstand work.

Herb tried to stay pretty traditional to the melodies of these tunes, what he calls the "Jimmy Day" approach. Some of the ballads are reminiscent of Jimmy's Steel And Strings album. The shuffles are played like you'd have to play them on a Texas dancehall bandstand. The arrangements contain lots of licks, intros, turnarounds, etc. that can be applied to any number of country songs.

  1. Blue Eyes Crying In The Rain - E
  2. Crazy Arms - F
  3. Heartaches By The Numbers - Bb
  4. She Thinks I Still Care - C

"Shuffles, Ballads, and Waltzes, Volume 2 "

10 Solo Arrangement for E9th Tuning
Standard 3 pedal / 3 knee lever setup

This is the follow-up to the very popular Shuffles, Ballads, and Waltzes course. Again Herb designed it for the experienced beginner through intermediate level player, and included is 10 arrangements of popular country standards heard every night on thousands of bandstands.

Once more, he stresses PLAYING THE MELODY, which herb feel is the best way to break the mindset of non-melodic "licks" playing, understand scales played in harmony, and to learn the fretboard of the steel guitar with alternate positions for minor chords, dominant (b7) chords, and major-seventh chords as well.

Each solo track is between 1 1/2 minutes to 2 1/2 minutes in length and plays the song in its entirety, frequently with several choruses. Generally, each song has a 4 bar intro and a 4 bar tag or "outro."

Following each track with the recorded steel solo is the rhythm track Herb used for backup. The student then has a rhythm track to play to himself.  The CD is over 40 minutes in length. The 24-page book contains the note-for-note tablature of the music played on the CD.

  1. Together Again - D (includes the Tom Brumley solo, more)
  2. Four Walls - C (JIm Reeves waltz hit)
  3. The End Of The World - Eb (Skeeter Davis classic)

"ESSENTIAL BANDSTAND SOLOS"

Rides You Need To Play In Texas
15 Arrangements for E9th Tuning

When Herb was teaching privately, many players would come to him and ask for an appropriate lead for a particular song, since they played in bands... formal and informal... that required them to come up with a intro, turnaround, or 16 bar solo. To address these requests, Herb created this course called "Essential Bandstand Solos".

This book/CD set contains 15 solos/turnarounds to some of the most popular traditional country tunes played in Texas. Rather than presenting the entire song with verse, chorus, etc., these arrangements are for the most part 16-bar solos as would be played onstage in a band situation, some with intros and tags. Like his other courses, the CD contains Herb playing the solo to a rhythm track, followed by the rhythm track itself for the player to practice with.

All recordings and tabs are for E9, and geared for the experienced beginner to intermediate player.

  1. All My Exes Live In Texas - A
  2. The Bottle Let Me Down intro - D
  3. Anybody Going To San Antone - G
  4. Drinking Champagne - A

"E9 By Request "

Tunes You Asked For
9 Arrangements for E9th Tuning

This one is entitled "E9 By Request," because in it Herb tabbed out arrangements for some tunes he's had requests for, by both bandstand players and home pickers. There's a couple traditional Price/Tubb shuffles, a couple swing-style tunes, a couple bandstand instrumentals that steel players get requests for, and some intro/solo/turnaround arrangements for country standards, like George Strait/Merle Haggard material.

Like Herb's previous material, there's a CD and a book. The CD contains a track of the solo with Herb playing it, followed by the rhythm track he used without the steel. The book includes tab for all of the solos.

The copedent used is standard E9th, 3 pedals and 2 levers (E-F and E-D#).

  1. Last Date... key of C, entire song
  2. That's The Way Love Goes... key of E, 2 choruses
